About Me

Melanie Velasquez is a photojournalist. She worked at The Red and Black as an Senior Editor for Guides and Magazine and DEI Chair. She has aspired to be a comprehensive journalist since she was a child. As she has attended the University of Georgia, she has learned how important it is to “experiment”,whether it be in journalism, hobbies or work. While working at The Red and Black, she has honed skills she did not know she could have. She first entered The Red and Black with little to no knowledge of photography, but after a semester she had improved so much, she was able to become the Special Publications Chief Photographer– a position she loved dearly, but eventually worked as an editor which enables her more creative writing freedom. She loves to photograph markets, pets, food and more. She hopes for the future to create her own women and children’s shelter right in Athens, Georgia, to combat the ever-growing homeless population. When she isn’t taking photos or documenting delicious meals, she can be found hiking in North Georgia or spending quality time with her family and friends.
